We went to Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda in Chengdu, and it has been a highlight of the trip so far due to the fact we both got to cuddle a young Giant Panda!!!! As well as seeing loads of very happy Giant Pandas and Red Pandas.
The Panda research base exists to help with the breeding of an ex-situ (artificial environment) population of Giant Pandas to safeguard the species from going extinct. With Giant Pandas being notoriously difficult to breed their work is heavily focused on breeding and raising a genetically diverse Giant Panda population in captivity so that in the future when new reserves are established they will be able to reintroduce captive breed Pandas into the wild. It kind of a Noah's Ark for Pandas, waiting for it to be safe for them to go back out into the wild.
The park itself was very nice with large enclosures and lots of greenery for the Pandas They all seemed very happy but then again I think a Pandas life is good if they get food and rest (the spend 16 hours a day eating). Simple requirements for a happy life. In China spoilt young children are sometimes told off by saying "your like a baby giant Panda" as they are seen as very demanding of food and sleep. We loved the Panda attitude to life :D
All in all best bit so far!!! hope you enjoy the pics :)
